Halloween’s Holy Grail: The Sith Lord

So you want to be Darth Vader for Halloween. Congratulations on choosing the most powerful, menacing, awesome villain costume available. If I were at a costume party and saw a realistic Sith Lord walk in the house with his black boots and trailing cape, it would shut me right up. The moment he enters your Halloween party the party gets real. Everyone would be careful not to displease him, or you could get “the pinching” choke hold of death. Overall, this kind of costume has to be ranked up there on the all-time funnest costumes to wear at a Halloween party. But if you haven’t noticed by now, there are a ton of costume shop sites online, with many Darth Vader “looks,” each with its corresponding price. For instance, some suits which sell around thirty or fifty dollars may not include all the accessories a high-end costume would, nor be as high in quality. That is why we have listed some of the top Vader replica suits and who sells them so you can easily compare.

2 levels of  Vader costumes

You can either go simple and get the cheaper, ½ mask, printed chest piece costume, or you go full-out and get the real deal with injection molded armor, a chest that lights up, the works. These are premium costumes with high tech accessories, and sell for upwards of $900. The more expensive costumes are awesome, but usually out of the average wearer’s price range, especially if they only plan on using it for a Halloween or two.

The smartest choice, in my opinion, would be to start at a mid-grade level costume and make some minor additions to help spoof it up a bit. I would want an actual chest piece, not the printed “foam shirt” seen on the children’s costumes and bottom shelf adult costumes. Once the costumes get up around sixty dollars or more they start having more realistic chest pieces and belts. The boots and gloves are a must, and the gloves should have large collars on them. The light saber is almost always sold separately, probably because they are easily available at many stores, online and in town. There is also the chance the wearer already has one at home. He is dressing as Darth Vader after all, and is probably a fan.

If the mask that comes with your replica costume is not up to par with what you expected, perhaps purchasing a “deluxe” mask that looks authentic to the movie would be the best upgrade you could get. Another great buy would be the Darth Vader voice changer module that can fit inside many of the helmets. Look for them here.

As your costume comes together, also be sure to practice “the air death pinch” and Vader’s famous “pointing and making strange gestures with his hands” as he talks. And of course, think James Earl Jones.
